Do you use protection? Here’s why you should

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S. Current estimates are that ONE in FIVE Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime.

Approximately 9,500 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with skin cancer DAILY.

Even ONE blistering sunburn during childhood or adolescence can nearly double a person’s chance of developing melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, later in life. Sadly nearly 20 Americans die from melanoma every day.

– UV exposure is the most preventable risk factor for all skin cancers

– Water, snow and sand can reflect and intensify the sun’s damaging rays

– Even on cloudy days, up to 80% of the sun’s UV rays can reach your skin

Practice Safe Sun

Everyone is at risk of skin cancer – regardless of age, gender or race. Your skin needs protection from the sun in order to reduce your risk of skin cancer.

Follow these simple steps:

1. Seek shade: especially from 10 am to 2pm when the sun’s rays are the strongest.

2. Dress to protect yourself from the sun: by wearing a long-sleeved shirt, pants, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses.

3. Apply a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen: with an SPF of 30 or higher. Remember to reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating.

Can you spot skin cancer?

Most skin cancers aren’t found during a check-up. They’re found by people who notice a suspicious-looking spot on their own skin and then see a dermatologist.

Do you think that you could spot a possible skin cancer? Find out by taking this short quiz.

Did you know that skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S.?

ONE in FIVE Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime, and one person dies from melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, every hour.

Since exposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays is the most preventable risk factor for skin cancer, protect your skin by seeking shade, wearing protective clothing, and, generously applying sunscreen

There are two types of sunscreen:

1. Physical sunscreen

This sunscreen works like a shield. It sits on the surface of your skin, deflecting the sun’s rays. Look for the active ingredients: ZINC OXIDE and/or TITANIUM DIOXIDE. This sunscreen is best for sensitive skin.

2. Chemical Sunscreen

This sunscreen works as a sponge, absorbing the sun’s rays.

Look for one or more of the following active ingredients: OXYBENZONE, AVOBENZONE, OCTISALATE, OCTOCRYLENE, HOMOSALATE and OCTINOXATE.

This formulation tends to be easier to rub onto the skin without leaving a white residue.

If you have concerns about certain sunscreen ingredients, use the information above to choose an alternative that works for you. As long as it is broad-spectrum, water-resistant and has an SPF 30 or higher, it can effectively protect you from the sun. Make sure you reapply it every two hours or after swimming or sweating.

If you have questions about how to protect your skin or choose a sunscreen, talk to a board-certified dermatologist or learn more at spotskincancer.org. For more information, visit the American Academy of Dermatology Association website.

Miracles in a bottle

You may have noticed that your favorite cosmetic lines, from pharmacy brands to products of the largest companies, promote vitamin creams to hydrate the skin, reduce wrinkles and rejuvenate the skin. But can supplements really help you fight aging? – “Yes, no doubt! To stay healthy, our skin needs the right mixture of nutrients. But I have doubts about the vitamin industry, since it is not always an honest business. Many times I have come across the fact that the label does not indicate what is contained in these tablets. ” A New York therapist Holly Phillips adds: “The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has different requirements for dietary supplements and drugs, and many supplements do not have a wide range of research on their effectiveness and safety. This does not mean that they will not work, but you must make sure that they are safe for you, and therefore be sure to discuss the possibility of taking them with your doctor. ”

Why do I need to take extra vitamins? “The skin consists of 20% of the epidermis, a barrier that protects us from the environment, and 80% of the dermis, which acts as the basis for the epidermis,” says Howard Murad, a dermatologist and founder of Murad, Inc., which produces a number of dietary supplements . You must take supplements that will work on the dermis, because products designed for external skin care of the face, affect only the epidermis. Using both methods, you solve the issues of nutrition of the skin inside and out. You cannot have healthy skin without a healthy body.

Not sure which supplements to take? Here is the list of the recommended supplements that should be considered in the composition of the additives:

Vitamin A Increases the content of elastin, collagen and hyaluronic acid in the skin.
Vitamin C it is a collagen stimulant that also protects you from sunburn.
Coenzyme Q-10 promotes better antioxidant effects.
Biotin protects skin from drying out, and hair and nails from excessive brittleness.

Vitamin E a powerful antioxidant that helps keep skin hydrated and reduces inflammation.

Lycopene is a carotenoid that normalizes cell function.
Omega-3 fatty acids are great for dry skin and help reduce inflammation.
in the body.
Pomegranate Extract strengthens the skin, making it less susceptible to the environment.
Green tea contains polyphenols, which protect against skin photodamage and epidermis compaction.

Buyer Tips
• Check on the product packaging the “USP approved”seal. Its presence means that the product has been tested and the list of ingredients on the label matches what’s inside.

• Buy supplements in stores you trust. Large companies are not willing to risk their reputations by not putting a list of ingredients on their product packages.

• Do not forget to check the recommended dose and talk to your doctor to make sure that the ingredients are not contraindicated to you. If you are taking any of the statins – drugs against atherosclerosis and high cholesterol – some antioxidants may interfere with its action

How to Avoid Inflamed Skin After a Facial Procedure

Professional cosmetic procedures should be a relaxing experience, however, skin reactions after the procedure are not! Experts say that tampering with your own skin prior to visiting the esthetician, is responsible for the vast majority of procedure complications. Here is a list of 7 things that you should not do if you want to avoid inflamed skin after a facial procedure.

1. Don’t depilate 24 hours prior to the procedure

Waxing removes the top layer of skin cells like exfoliation. Cosmetic procedures immediately after will cause severe irritation to the skin.

2. Don’t touch face to harsh bristles

Mens stubble is unkind to sensitive facial skin, touching your skin to the stubble will cause redness and inflammation.

3. Don’t spend time in the sun the day before beauty session

Cosmetic procedures can greatly reduce the damage caused by sunlight. Your skin needs to “recharge” after a being in the sun.  Otherwise, your skin may have an unexpected reaction to anti-aging and anti-acne ingredients used by your cosmetologist.

4. Don’t have Botox injections

If you have received Botox injections, defer your facial for at least 48 hours. The areas of the recent shots cannot be massaged to avoid migration of Botox serum. If the Botox does affect the site, it can take up to 12 weeks for the effects to subside.

5. Don’t deep cleanse at home

Squeezing pimples and blackheads before heading to the spa will cause severe inflammation in these areas, which again, will hamper your facial results. Go to a reputable spa, and leave the cleaning procedure to a professional esthetician.

6. Don’t get eyelash extensions

Never rub, use lotions or steam during the first 48 hours after you’ve got eyelash extensions. Products used during your facial may cause the eyelash extensions to come off, wasting all that time and money.

7. Don’t use exfoliating products

Ingredients like Retinol and glycolic acid, increase skin sensitivity. If you are not sure of the ingredients, please refrain from using them for a few days before the scheduled procedure.
