B-Healthy: Are you Getting Enough B Vitamins?

The B vitamin complex consists of eight individual B vitamins. They are often recognized together, but each performs an essential and unique role in the body.  The B vitamins also help your body convert food into fuel, allowing us to maintain a steady energy level throughout the day.

B Vitamins Illuminari MedSpa Agoura Hills CAThe B Vitamins

B1 (Thiamin)

B1 helps the body create new cells. Many refer to it as the anti-stress vitamin because of its ability to build up the immune system. This vitamin is a significant factor in breaking down simple carbohydrates and support the normal function of the nervous system.

What is a good source? Whole grains, nuts, peas, peanuts, red meats, beans, spinach, milk, kale, cauliflower, blackstrap molasses and wheat germ

B2 (Riboflavin)

Riboflavin fights free radicals, which damage cells within the body. It aids in preventing heart disease and early aging. B2 is crucial for the production of red blood cells, necessary for oxygen distribution throughout the body.

What is a good source? Almonds, wild rice, milk, salmon, yogurt, eggs, beef, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, spinach, and soybeans

B3 (Niacin)

Niacin, or B3, is praised for its ability to raise HDL cholesterol. This will lessen the amount of the LDL cholesterol in the body. Niacin levels are often lower in alcoholics, but most people have normal levels of this B vitamin through diet.

What is a good source? Yeast, red meat, fish, poultry, peanuts, wheat bread, milk, eggs, beans and green vegetables

B5 (Pantothenic Acid)

Pantothen, from Greek origin, means from all sides. This vitamin is available in nearly every food group. B5 breaks down fats and carbohydrates for the body to convert into energy. In addition to breaking down fats and carbohydrates, it’s relied upon in the production of testosterone and other hormones. This B vitamin helps promote skin health and supports cellular energy production.

What is a good source? Avocados, yogurt, eggs, organ meats, whole grains, cashews, milk, broccoli, and legumes

B6 (Pyridoxine)

B6 is needed to regulate levels and metabolize amino acids and glycogen. It promotes the production of serotonin, norepinephrine, and melatonin; these hormones are vital players in mood and healthy sleep patterns. B6 is necessary for red blood cell formation and aids in the reduction of inflammation.

What is a good source? Chicken, eggs, turkey, tuna, bananas, salmon, lentils, cooked spinach, sunflower seeds, cheese, brown rice, and carrots

B7 (Biotin)

Biotin has often been tagged a vitamin for beauty. It supports healthy skin, hair, and nails. B7 assists in fat, protein, and carbohydrate metabolism, and helps diabetics to keep blood glucose levels in control. This vitamin is vital for pregnant mothers to ensure healthy baby growth.

What is a good source? Barley, liver, yeast, strawberries, pork, chicken, cheese, fish, soybeans, potatoes, cauliflower, egg yolks and nuts

B9 (Folic Acid or Folate)

Folic acid, the synthetic form of B9, appears in fortified foods like bread and cereal. Folate, known for its role in fetal growth and development, plays a critical role in proper development of the fetus’ nervous system. B9 helps prevent memory loss and depression.

What is a good source? Dark leafy greens, asparagus, brewer’s yeast, beets, dates, salmon, avocados, root vegetables, milk, liver, bulgur wheat, and beans

B12 (Cobalamin)

This B vitamin plays an imperative role in the pathways throughout the body. B12 works in conjunction with B9 to produce red blood cells. This, in turn, helps iron do its job to create hemoglobin. It is necessary for DNA synthesis. B12 is found in animal sources, so strict vegetarians may be low on this vitamin.

What is a good source? Fish, shellfish, eggs, dairy, beef, and pork

Illuminari MedSpa offers both B complex and B-12 injections for supplementation and the promotion of a healthy you. If you are not sure if you are getting enough B vitamins, or if you have any questions, please contact us. We serve clients in Agoura Hills and the surrounding areas.

The 5 Benefits of Amino Acids

Amino acids are nutrients that are made in the human body and appear in foods. They exist as molecular building blocks of protein and muscle tissue or free amino acids. Amino acids are typically divided into two groups: essential amino acids and non-essential amino acids. Essential amino acids (also called vital) are necessary but cannot be produced in the body; therefore, they are supplied by the food we eat. Non-essential amino acids are unique because they are synthesized within the body’s cells from other amino acids.

amino acids illuminari medspa agoura hills ca

Are They Important to Me?

These acids are the basis of the body’s sustainability and are essential for metabolic processes. They ensure the optimal transport and storage of nutrients. Metabolic problems caused by a lack of amino acids in the body can range from diabetes, arthritis, insomnia, high cholesterol, erectile dysfunction, hair loss, and even wrinkles.

5 Benefits of Amino Acids?

#1 – They promote collagen production

One of the most crucial acids for skin is Creatine. It helps the skin function properly and plays an important role in your body’s production of collagen. Collagen is the protein that keeps skin youthful and protects your skin from damage. We always need more collagen, especially as we age, so getting more creatine (created by carnitine and arginine) in your diet is key for healthier skin.

#2 – They increase hydration and moisture

Amino acids surround the cells of your skin with a thin layer of water, protecting them from damage by heat, UV rays, and other pollutants. Amino acids will allow the skin to replace lost moisture because of this, creating a younger-looking you!

#3 -They promote healthy pH balance and reduce aging

Glutamine keeps the skin’s pH levels up. Acidity causes damage to your skin, which leads to an increase in decaying skins cells and a decrease in skin repair. The body performs best in an alkaline state, and glutamine allows the body to protect itself and repair damaged cells. Glutamine leaches from the muscles if the body is not getting enough, and the aging process is far more noticeable when this happens due to a loss of elasticity. Remember, a balanced diet is a precondition for vibrant skin. (1)

#4 – They promote fat burning

Carnitine plays a definite role in the body’s fat burning process. It is necessary for the release, transport, and burn fat cells for fuel. Carnitine makes the body far more efficient at burning fat. This results in more weight loss through fat burning. Who doesn’t want that?

#5 – They promote strong hair and nails

Methionine is another acid that plays a large role in healthy nails and hair. It is necessary for the production of both, and it actually plays a key role in the reduction of hair loss. Taking this amino acid can promote hair growth and generate an increase in keratin, which is essential for healthy nails.

If you do not eat animal-based foods, your diet could be lacking in essential acids. If this is the case, a supplement may be key in getting amino acids you might be missing. Make sure your supplement provides the essential amino acids your body requires for optimal performance. It will certainly thank you. How? You will feel better and look better!

Can Cupping Therapy Help You?

Cupping therapy is considered a specific healing skill in China, and it is passed down from generation to generation. Ancient texts show that cupping was initially used by Taoist herbalists to treat ailing royalty.

Cupping healers have been known to treat a variety of symptoms and illnesses that couldn’t be cured by traditional medicine, including pulmonary tuberculosis, muscle and back pain, colds, and pinched nerves. Cupping also has been used for patients with anemia, arthritis, mental illness, and fertility issues.

Some doctors have started implementing cupping into their patients’ treatments to alleviate symptoms of congestion, pain, and chronic infections from a natural approach. Cupping therapy is believed to remove toxins and heavy metals from the body, ultimately improving overall immunity.

cupping therapy Illuminari Medspa Agoura Hills CADoes Cupping Therapy Really Work?

One report reviewed 135 studies on cupping therapies published between 1992 and 2010 (1). These researchers concluded that cupping is beneficial in treating various digestive, skin, hormonal and inflammatory diseases.

Cupping therapy is used to treat a variety of conditions safely:

  • Respiratory infections
  • Blood disorders (anemia, hemophilia)
  • Joint pain due to arthritis and fibromyalgia
  • Migraines
  • Muscle pain
  • Fertility disorders
  • Skin problems (acne, eczema)
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Mental disorders, anxiety, depression
  • Asthma, allergies
  • Cellulite, varicose veins

Benefits of Cupping Therapy

Cupping therapy is often administered in conjunction with massage and essential oils, as well as with traditional medicine. It works by expanding the capillaries and increasing fluid amounts traveling through tissues. Cupping therapy also provokes a relaxation response in some people, so it lowers stress and its effects on the body. It has worked for millions of people over the span of many years.

Helps Reduce Pain

One common reason people turn to alternative treatment methods is that they want a safe form of relief for joint and muscle pain. Research has shown that cupping therapy significantly reduced low back pain, helped relieve pain from respiratory issues and had a positive outcome in treating cancer pain. (2)

Cupping is believed to release deep tissue, relax tense muscles, and ease stiffness often associated with chronic pain, rheumatism, migraines, and fatigue. Athletes have used cupping therapy to naturally improve performance and reduce cramps, pain, and scar tissue.

Boosts Skin Health

Cupping often reduces skin inflammation, cellulite, and acne. It tones and firms skin by improving blood flow and expanding capillaries. Before treatment, oil lubricates the skin, then during treatment it brings heat to the area.

Treats Respiratory Issues and Colds

Cupping promotes a boost immune function by moving blood and lymphatic fluid throughout the body. This boost can reduce allergies, infections, and asthma.

Improves Digestion

For digestive issues, healers perform cupping in the following areas: over the bladder, the navel, the stomach, and around the kidneys.

People with frequent stomach pain, diarrhea, loss of appetite, water retention, and gastrointestinal diseases often find relief with cupping therapy.

Is Cupping Therapy Safe?

Cupping might be somewhat daunting to someone who is new to the practice, but rest assured that cupping therapy isn’t painful. During a cupping session, you might feel some heat and tightness around the cup, but many find this relaxing.

Most medical practitioners consider cupping therapy quite safe. Keep in mind that it’s not uncommon for skin discoloration to develop after cupping, which can last a few days to a couple of weeks.

Cupping Therapy is a natural approach to wellness. It is a fabulous alternative for those who are searching for an alternative to medications with a list of dangerous side effects. If you would like more information about the benefits of cupping therapy, please contact our experienced staff at Illuminari.

Why Weight Loss Teas Don’t Work

You might feel the temptation to accelerate weight loss with an herbal slimming tea.  After all, the word “herbal” makes the product seem healthy, and you will take all the help you can get to shed those unwanted pounds! Unfortunately, the promises that you want so desperately to believe with these teas are too good to be true. According to most labels, the ingredients in these weight loss teas suppress appetite and boost metabolism. The truth of the matter is herbal teas do not magically promote permanent fat loss and are never a good substitute for a healthy diet and consistent exercise regimen.

weight loss teas Illuminari MedSpa Agoura Hills CAWhat are in Weight Loss Teas?

Well, it is not a coincidence that drinking weight loss teas can send you hopping to the bathroom. Many formulas out there contain a laxative or diuretic. These increase urination and/or defecation. You notice a drop in the scale after drinking these, but weight loss tea is merely expediting weight loss, not fat loss. Also, some diuretics and laxatives react adversely to certain medications and physical conditions. It is particularly risky when the teas don’t disclose that they contain laxatives or diuretics. Consult with your doctor before taking a diuretic, including one in a weight loss tea.

Over-consumption of weight loss teas with diuretics and/or laxatives can lead to dehydration. It can also result in a deficiency in electrolytes and minerals that promote healthy heart functions. Long-term use of a tea with a laxative effect can interfere with colon function, causing cramping and bloating. Your colon can even become dependent on a laxative, resulting in painful bowel movements without one.

Metabolism-Boosting Ingredients

Some weight loss teas contain ingredients that supposedly boost your metabolism. Studies have found that caffeine, guarana, capsaicin from hot peppers, cinnamon, and green tea have properties that can potentially increase metabolism.  Ultimately, though, the net effect on your daily caloric burn is negligible. A slight boost in metabolism lasts a very short period after ingestion and is unable to provide a steady enough help to noticeably alter your weight. Research on these ingredients is limited, and you should be wary of trying any products before consulting a physician.

Herbal Tea as Appetite Suppressants

Various ingredients in herbal slimming teas, such as guarana, caffeine and bitter orange, do help suppress the appetite slightly. You might be prone to eating less and losing a little weight. Extended use of products containing these ingredients, though, is not recommended; there are adverse reactions associated with their long-term use. Teas that contain a concentrated amount of stimulants (i.e., caffeine and guarana) can seriously interfere with sleep and cause a jittery feeling. Bitter orange is found especially unsafe by the National Institute of Health due to its ability to induce an elevated heart rate, high blood pressure, and an increased risk of stroke and heart attack.

Some ingredients in weight loss teas encourage production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter in the brain, which tells the body that it is full.  St. John’s Wort is one of these “herbs.” It often appears as one of several ingredients in weight loss teas, and it is known for its capacity to raise serotonin levels. St. John’s Wort can have contraindications with medications. These include prescription antidepressants, anesthesia, and cough medicine. St. John’s Wort causes blood pressure spikes, dizziness, anxiety, and nausea in some people.

Sensible Practices for Slimming Down

The sound of an herbal weight loss tea may sound like a reasonable weight-loss tool, but the classic approach is tried and true.  Exercise and healthy eating habits effect change throughout the body. Consuming 500 to 1,000 fewer calories than are burned daily will help you lose 1 to 2 pounds a week. Keep in mind, many weight loss teas and supplements include a recommended diet and exercise plan. Which one is really creating a significant change with long-term results?

Tea is a refreshing drink. It has beneficial properties. Green tea, especially matcha green, has a noteworthy benefit: it contains catechins. This type of antioxidant may help detoxify the body, reduce body weight, accelerate recovery time after a workout, and significantly reduce free radical damage.

The bottom line is that weight loss teas are not effective and can actually be detrimental to your health. If you are looking to get healthier and leaner, you need to exercise and eat a well-balanced diet. Customize a regimen that works for you.  At Illuminari MedSpa, we will explore your specific needs and lifestyle goals to establish a weight-loss approach that will leave you looking and feeling revitalized!

If you want more information on how proper nutrition and exercise can lead to a more beautiful you, call Illuminari MedSpa. We serve clients in Agoura Hills and the surrounding areas.

Best Skincare Regimen for Maximum Beauty

Beauty is only skin deep. Well, that is only partially true. How we feel affects how we look, and how we look often dictates how we feel. The skin is the fancy gift wrap that makes us beautiful and protects the precious package within. Take care of it. The most effective kind of skincare options varies on your skin type, but the best skincare regimen itself is fundamentally the same.

best skin care regimen Illuminari Medspa Agoura Hills CAOily Skincare Regimen

Switching to natural, and gentle, skin care options is often beneficial in removing excess oil production. There are some natural ingredients that can remove excess oil and, ultimately, help prevent breakouts.

Exfoliate: Mix equal parts sea salt and oil (like olive or almond) to create a natural scrub to remove impurities without stripping essential oils.

Cleanse: Believe it or not, you can actually clean your skin with oils.  Oily skin is a symptom of an imbalance, so introducing good oils to the skin reduces the production of the clogging oils.  As a rule of thumb, you will need more castor oil than other oils to keep your skin from becoming overly oily as you incorporate this new regimen. To begin, mix ½ cup of castor with ¼ cup of olive oil. Massage this into your face and rinse with warm water.

Moisturize and Tone: If you are prone to oily skin, you will require less moisturizer as your skin adjusts. You may even find that a regimen of oil cleansing is sufficient after time. However, jojoba oil is a wonderful moisturizer that does not clog the pores. It is also a great carrier oil if you want to add a few drops of essential oils. To tone and keep problem areas from producing too much oil, try a diluted apple cider vinegar toner. You can mix 2 tablespoons in a cup of water to spot tone before applying your makeup to reduce shine. It works best if stored in the refrigerator. The chilled toner is an instant “pick-me-up” for your face in the morning!

Normal or Combination Skincare Regimen

People with “normal” skin can generally use a variety of skincare options and have great results.

Exfoliate: A homemade sugar scrub is a wonderful natural exfoliator. An excellent recipe for this is 2 tablespoons coconut oil, 1 teaspoon organic raw honey, 6 drops of orange essential oil, and 6 drops of tea tree essential oil.

Cleanse: Again, oil cleansing is a therapeutic way to clean and soothe skin.  To oil cleanse, you need a soft wash cloth and oil. How to do it: Place a hot, damp washcloth on the face for 20 seconds. Remove the washcloth, massage oil into the skin, leave it on your face for about 30 seconds, and use a hot cloth to gently wipe off the oil. A mixture of ¼ cup castor oil and ¾ cup of carrier oil like jojoba or almond oil is an effective combination.

Moisturize: Normal skin does not require a lot of moisturizer.  However, argan oil is an excellent option to combat wrinkles. Also, rose water is a refreshing choice.

Dry Skincare Regimen

With age comes drying skin. The use of natural oils will help skin to balance the production of oil and make skin feel supple and energized.

Exfoliate:  A sugar scrub is definitely a revitalizer and makes skin feel fresh. Take care not to rub too hard and irritate delicate skin.

Cleanse: If you choose to incorporate castor oil in your oil cleanse, only use a small amount. A teaspoon to ¼ cup of jojoba, almond, coconut, or almond oil is very effective.

Moisturize: Although we need a good moisturizer as we age, pores can still clog. Argan oil, jojoba oil, and apricot oil are fabulous moisturizers that do not clog pores. Essential oils that are known for combating wrinkles are rose, frankincense, and sandalwood. A few drops go a long way!

The Best Skincare Regimen from the Inside Out

To promote the natural production of collagen, you can incorporate vitamin C and A. Also, magnesium is a crucial mineral that the body needs to be healthy.  It helps other parts of the body, too. These supplements can be very beneficial. Finally, the addition of gelatin to your diet will improve the quality of your skin, hair, and nails.

Remember, the California sun can wreak havoc on your skin. Good skin care is essential for the health of the largest organ in your body, and it is up to you to treat it as the masterpiece it truly is. Illuminari MedSpa is dedicated to make you look and feel your very best from head to toe.  You are already beautiful, but when you are feeling less than fabulous, we are here to help!

If you want more information on the best skincare regimen for your skin, call Illuminari MedSpa. We serve clients in Agoura Hills and the surrounding areas.
